2 starS。 One for the artwork and another for a few instances of clever word working。My qualms with this book is representative of the recent Disney era, looks pretty but lacks anything of substance。 The artwork is sublime but the writing is found wanting。 This book seems as if the original film went through a translation process and then back to English。 Mistakes and bizarre issues abound。Did the author even watch hocus pocus? Why not give this job to an actual fan who would of been paid in peanu 2 starS。 One for the artwork and another for a few instances of clever word working。My qualms with this book is representative of the recent Disney era, looks pretty but lacks anything of substance。 The artwork is sublime but the writing is found wanting。 This book seems as if the original film went through a translation process and then back to English。 Mistakes and bizarre issues abound。Did the author even watch hocus pocus? Why not give this job to an actual fan who would of been paid in peanuts to do this job properly and not write so many inaccuracies that it seems like fanfiction。The film and it's script was supposed to be the foundation of this book。 Yet the pages detailing the spells of the film have entirely different words and phrases。 This is such a bizarre idea at creativity when fans are buying this book because of the film。I was so excited to order this and when it was delivered, it deflated my expectations not just of the book but of the new sequel film that is to be released。 I thought this book would sooth my anxiety about the sequel, perhaps a few clues hidden within, but please let this book have no foundation upon the sequel film。 The Cover。Why is the cover so bland and nothing at all reminiscent of the actual book in the film? If it wasn't for the Disney logo I would think it was to do with an off brand, fan made, unofficial book to do with the franchise。 (That being said a fan made version would of been better) This cover could of been made into a dust jacket and the cover beneath could be a printed image of the Eye Cover we all know and love。 The cover is what we judge the book by, it is the first thing that catches our eye。 So why not at least make it like the cover of the spell book。These 3 reasons are my own speculations to try to justify this。- They either don't care for the presentation- They don't won't this book to be actually associated with the franchise but if that is so why manufacture it?- Or they are not allowed to make the cover with the eye due to reasons unknown perhaps they are going to make a book with the eye in the future。 Who is this for? I keep having to remind myself this is a booked aimed at children and to not judge it too harshly。 But at many intervals it presents itself as a book for older fans of the series。 The fans of the film will look at this with a critical eye so why is it lacking of actual substance and genuine respect for the source material。 And if that is so then why is it filled with inaccuracies? The spells from the film are completely different to those in this book。 Why? I don't understand。 Ardent fans of the film would like the words to be the same, and the majority of those buying this book, are fans of the film。 Other inaccuracies includeLatin。 Why is this the most lazy trope in anything to do with magic and witchcraft? Why write things in Latin at all? There was no Latin in the hocus pocus film。 So why would it be in the supposed reproduction of their spellbook。 It's a lazy attempt at mysticism when it cannot be tied to the franchise it is based off。 RhymesGod awful, painful rhyming。 Some rhymes work beautifully is my reason for the second star in my review but sometimes the rhymes are incredibly dreadful。 If you are ever to do anything in rhyme or meter please use a rhyming dictionary and if it doesn't work change the sentences。 Non-rhymes。Some of the spells are just basic sentences。 Yet in the Original hocus-pocus film all the spells rhyme。 It seemed like the author got bored and tired and gave up on some of the pages。 Why write a clever rhyme, when you can spout some idiotic Latin or boring sentence?Greek godsWhy include Greek gods in this book? I understand they have pagan roots but the Sanderson sisters are witches in a largely Christian community。 They even sell their soul to the devil。 Why Include deities from other cultures and places? Plus the spells that invoke the deities, invoke them for specific reasons for example the invocation to Dionysus is a hex to dry up a well。 Why did you have to include the deity, could they not have dried up a well with another incantation。 I didn't hear Winifred invoke Anubis or Osiris when resurrecting Billy Butcherson。 They didn't invoke Bastet the Egyptian cat goddess or Circe when transforming Thackeray Binx into his feline form。 It seemed lazy and misplaced。The 2018 book sequelThis book is more faithful to the abomination that was the 2018 Sequel book than the original film。 This includes pages and references to the sequel book with more accuracy than the pages concerning the original film。The actual book from the film。 This is a book based of a book。 Why couldn't they actually include pages seen in the film's。 Some of the pages in this book is a clear desperation to fill space so why couldn't they include pages from the original film。 In the 1993 film there was a handful of pages that was in the prop but they were printed again and again to build up the thickness of the book。 If you do a quick Google you can find a few。 But nope, none included here。 Just pale imitations that clearly are meant to resemble the layout of the original pages。 Here are my Extremely critical reasons for my review of this bookIn the original script it said that the witches had 3 different fathers。 Winifred's father was a warlock this explaining her proficiency at witchcraft, Mary's was a hound explaining her ability to sniff out children and finally Sarah's was a village idiot explaining her idiotic tendencies。But there is a page devoted to the Sanderson family tree and their one father's face has been erased。There is also on the family tree another scrawled out face with the name of E。 Podbury。 This is the name of the fourth Sanderson sisters from 2018 sequel book。 Why? Just why? Please let this not be a implication and reflection of the upcoming film。 There is a page on the black flame candle。 In the 1993 film it is described being made from the fat of a hanged man or hangman。 In this book, there are pages describe the idea of spell candles made all from the lard of a long lost lover。 You could justify it by saying the lover was hanged and therefore described as the fat of a hangman。 But the point still stands why change the wording at all when you have the foundation of your writing material at your fingertips。 This book should of used the original words not for the author to rework their own ideas Into it。 This book is to convey the love of the original film, with the original words, If I wanted another's ideas I would read their fanfiction。The song Sarah sings to lure the children is depicted on a page but with none of the original words。 Why change the words? It makes no sense。 Below is the direct quotation from this book which is supposed to depict Sarah's song in the film "come little children"。----"Come, sleepy youngsters, I'll lead thee afar,Into a realm of bewitchment。Come sleepy youngsters, trail my brightest star。Follow mine honeysuckle scent。" ---The movie has the writing material for you to transcribe yet it was taken upon the author to remake it in his creative writing。 Is this ego? Or perhaps the blame lies with marketing? Or a more higher level executive? It seems like they are trying to rewrite what the original film has said。 Are they trying to distance this book from the film? Is this the author trying to flaunt his creative writing? Has he ever seen the film or did he read the Wikipedia page and base this book from that ? This being said I did like a few parts of this book。 Again the artwork is amazing。 If you are a huge fan of hocus pocus and you can overlook these issues then definitely buy this book if not but for the artwork alone。 Thank you for reading my rant/review。 Have a great day。 。。。more

I picked this up because Hocus Pocus is my FAVORITE Halloween movie so when I saw it ya know。。。YES。While it was a very cute read there were a few things that made me have this a 4 star rather than a 5 star。For instance。。。the spells in this book are not what's in the movie that Hocus Pocus fans will be familiar with and love。 They're similar but。。。yeah。。。I wanted to LOVE this book and while I didn't, I still very much enjoyed reading it。 The artwork inside is beautiful and there are a couple of s I picked this up because Hocus Pocus is my FAVORITE Halloween movie so when I saw it ya know。。。YES。While it was a very cute read there were a few things that made me have this a 4 star rather than a 5 star。For instance。。。the spells in this book are not what's in the movie that Hocus Pocus fans will be familiar with and love。 They're similar but。。。yeah。。。I wanted to LOVE this book and while I didn't, I still very much enjoyed reading it。 The artwork inside is beautiful and there are a couple of surprises along the way。All in all, if you are a Hocus Pocus fan, I think you will enjoy this book even with tbe differences it contains。 And with spooky season coming upon us (it's practically here!!) I couldn't resist picking this up when I saw that it was coming in。 One of my all-time favorite movies。 This was a fun companion to the illustrated book, and the unofficial cookbook that I already have。 Loved it。 I couldn't resist picking this up when I saw that it was coming in。 One of my all-time favorite movies。 This was a fun companion to the illustrated book, and the unofficial cookbook that I already have。 Loved it。 。。。more
